How Does SEO Work?

There are a lot of things that go into Search Engine Optimisation - I do mean A LOT. Tiny little nitty-gritty things as well as some obvious one. Whether you have an SEO specialist or Agency working with you or doing it yourself, it is good to know what goes into the Optimising part.

Here are Drive SEO, we put things simply and boiled SEO down to 3 things to do.

  • Website Optimisation
  • Content
  • Backlinks

Each of those 3 things can be broken down even more into thousands of tasks and actions. We won't go that deep in this article.

But, you can expect any SEO specialist or Agency to be working tirelessly to address those 3 items.

Website Optimisation

To fulfil the Website Optimisation part of SEO, your website or page needs to tick all boxes that Search Engines - like Google, put in place.

It is like a beauty pageant. Google will look at your website with a fine-toothed comb, analyse it and judge it. Google will see if it is:

  • Well dressed and made?
  • Is it pretty and easy on the eyes?
  • Does it meet the judging criteria
  • Can it sing? Dance and perform?
  • Does it answer all the questions correctly

Once done, Google will deem your website to be the winner, the number One or a runner up.

But enough with the analogy, what Search Engines look for in a website is:

  • How is it coded?
  • How fast does it load? (faster the better)
  • Is it easy for a person to use?
  • Is all the backend information there?
  • Is the information on this page useful to a person?
  • If so, which people?

The list can go on. This website optimisation is an ongoing process. Search Engines always keep updating what they are looking for in a website.

Content

Content is another part of that beauty pageant. Contact is the information your website and pages have in them. Google is looking:

  • Is there fresh information?
  • Is it handy and useful to someone?
  • Is it relevant to what people are searching for?
  • Is it from a reputable source?
  • What kind of site is this?

Backlinks

Now you might think this is a buzz-word, but it is the backbone of all SEO strategies. Backlinks are hyperlinks from another website that go to your website.

Google believes that if your website is good enough to be referred by another website, the information is good and reliable. Makes sense. AHREFs puts it well in their article, here.

Think of a backlink like a vote of confidence. Here is another analogy.

It is like Australia Idol. There are the main judges to pick the winner. But there are the audience votes as well coming from mobiles and websites. They influence the judges votes.

So Google looks at how many backlinks your website has and makes some decisions there. Generally, the more backlinks the better. But, it can detect if a website is cheating as well - so be weary.
